engineer. The role stays, the conversational layer is added

The SE Role Has Changed.
The Profile It Was Hired For Has Stayed the Same.

Solution Engineering used to be an execution role. Today your team owns the whole journey, from ideation and discovery to requirements and hand-over. The technical strength is there. The conversational layer that now decides the deal has rarely been trained.

Then

Execution Role

Requirements arrived. The team translated them into a clean solution and showed, at the right moment, that it works.

  • Demo on request, discovery done by the AE
  • Hired for engineering depth, measured on technical quality
  • "Show that it works"
Now

Ownership of the Journey

SEs are in the room from the first idea. They shape discovery, formulate requirements, run the PoC and carry the customer outcome into implementation.

  • More discovery, more customer ownership, more conversation
  • Measured on technical win rate, PoC conversion and the next step after the demo
  • "Find out what it is really about, then show the optimal solution"
From a discovery call

A Head of Solution Engineering at a B2B software company leads four engineers. All of them technically excellent, most of them with an implementation background. His team now owns the customer journey end to end, and he had built a blueprint in which every SE documents the customer's pain points, their impact and the matching solution.

What he described as missing: reading social cues, asking thoughtful questions in a way that feels like a conversation, connecting the tech to the business value, writing for the person who will actually read it, taking ownership of the client outcome. Two engineers had already left because the new role asked for exactly that. The two who joined were chosen with presales in mind.

Four Situations That Keep Coming Up

These conversations happen in technically brilliant teams. They are patterns, and patterns follow a mechanism. Mechanisms can be learned.

01

The demo lands. Then very little happens.

The customer praises the demo, the next step stays vague, and you see it in the forecast before Sales brings it up. The team earned the technical win. The commitment to buy is a different layer.

"You've earned the right to win. You just haven't earned the commitment to buy."
2Win!, 2026
02

The demo talks. The customer goes quiet.

Completeness feels safe, so the meeting fills with functionality and the customer gets little room. You hear it in the AE's feedback. A shared vocabulary is what makes it coachable.

"The best sales engineers win because they create more space for the customer to enter the conversation."
Björn Bredenkamp, Learning Architect and Coach, via Navattic
03

Technically strong. Unsure on the human level.

SEs see themselves as solvers of technical questions and keep their distance from anything that sounds like selling. That is exactly where the meeting is decided. The way in respects the engineer's identity and adds to it.

"Engineers need to stay engineers and add commercial skills that fit how they think."
Mark Moore, Help People Buy
04

The project stalls. The explanation is somewhere else.

"The other department hasn't delivered yet." "I haven't heard back in a week." Ownership of the customer outcome shows in exactly these moments: a clear suggestion, a question that moves things, a customer who feels led instead of waited for.

"The deal isn't stalled because your solution doesn't work. It's stalled because the right people don't yet feel enough reason to move."
2Win!, 2026

What the Customer Decides Before They Notice

Your team's technical substance lands almost entirely on the conscious five percent. It has to be right. It rarely decides alone. The other layer follows a mechanism that engineers find familiar terrain: understandable, testable, trainable.

95%
Unconscious decision

Two drivers run in every conversation

Fifteen years of research by Dr. Gerhard Bittner and Elke Schwarz at the University of Essen describe what happens on the unconscious level: two drivers that the customer's brain checks continuously, in every meeting, every mail, every demo.

Master

Competence, control, safety, freedom of choice. "Do I understand what is happening here? Am I in charge of the pace? Can I decide for myself?"

Value

Recognition, belonging, status, inclusion. "Am I being seen? Does this person understand my situation? Am I part of what is being built here?"

5%
Conscious evaluation

Both drivers met: the customer thinks with you

They tell you about their situation, bring their own examples, formulate what matters to them. That is the discovery your blueprint was built for.

One driver threatened: the customer closes down, answers briefly and hands you a requirements list instead of a story. We call that state BrainOFF!, and whatever you explain in that moment only partly arrives.

Trust and a good gut feeling grow from many small moments in which both drivers are served. That is what your SEs learn to see, to read and to shape, in their own words and in their own style.

Grounded in the NeuroDriver Model and Neuro-Communication research by Dr. Gerhard Bittner and Elke Schwarz (University of Essen, published with Springer, 2,000+ participants). The 95/5 scale comes from Gerald Zaltman, Harvard Business School.

Across the whole journey, from the first hello to the hand-over

Both drivers run from the first contact to the implementation. Every moment pays into them or draws on them. The training follows the moments your SEs actually have.

The opening
The good gut feeling takes shape from the first moment. How your SEs give the customer Master and Value from the start.
The discovery
The difference between a questionnaire and a conversation.
The demo
The demo as a dialogue: the customer is part of it, the demo follows their situation, and the next step is agreed in the room.
The objection
One of the drivers is under threat. This is where your SEs keep paying into the good gut feeling instead of trying to convince.
Micro-commitments
Small agreements along the whole journey, from the first call to the hand-over, so the final yes becomes the natural next step.

Same Information. Opposite Effect.

Every discovery question has a twin that fetches the same data and lands on the opposite side of the customer's gut feeling. Three pairs from the training, straight from Presales conversations.

Fills your field"Do you do this in Excel or in Airtable today?"
Opens the room"How do you solve this today?"
The closed question signals competence and ends the topic in one word. The open one hands the customer the direction, and suddenly they walk you through the whole process and every interface in it.
Fills your map"Who else is involved in the decision?"
Master and Value at once"Who besides you notices when this goes wrong?"
Same information. The second version makes the customer's own situation clearer to them while they answer, instead of filling a CRM field.
Before the demo"We'll show you the platform end to end."
Co-author"What would I have to show you so this demo is worth your time?"
Forty minutes of presentation take control away from the customer. One question makes them co-author of the demo before it starts, and you learn what you would otherwise have guessed.

"My People Are Engineers, Not Salespeople."

Agreed. And that is exactly the point of this sales training for Solution Engineers. What we train works through understanding a mechanism and applying it precisely, which is home turf for engineers. Charisma, rhetoric and a sales persona stay optional.

"We already run MEDDIC / Challenger / our own blueprint."

You can keep it. Neuro-Communication is a layer on top of any methodology. Your framework supplies the structure of the deal. The training supplies what happens underneath, in the sentence the SE says next.

"Our capacity is tied up in PoCs."

The program works on the team's live opportunities. Preparing a real discovery or a real demo inside the training replaces preparation time instead of adding to it. And every meeting that yields more makes the next PoC better qualified.

"Training fades after two weeks."

Behavioural change needs AHA-moments, time and repetition. That is why the sessions are spaced out, with application on active deals in between, an AI coach that remembers every tool, and optional 1:1 coaching during and after the program.

"Our product is too technical for an outside trainer."

The technical depth stays with your team. We bring the conversational layer and build every exercise from your deals, your buying committees and your demo flows. Your Principal SE stays the product expert in the room.

"My budget asks for a number."

Presales already has its metrics: technical win rate, PoC conversion, demo-to-next-step rate, ramp time of new SEs. We agree on two or three of them up front and look at the before-and-after together.

"Will my senior SEs actually join this?"

The strongest engineers are usually the first to adopt it, because it explains something they have felt in hundreds of meetings and gives it a name. Mechanisms earn respect from technical people. Scripts rarely do.

One Learning Journey, Built on Your Pipeline

The Solution Engineering training is designed around your team, your deals and your budget. The sessions are spaced out so that every tool is applied on a live opportunity before the next one is added. More than 80 percent of the time is practice.

Phase01

Before the training: interviews and design

Conversations with you and selected SEs, a look at your discovery template or blueprint, your demo flows and the kinds of cases your team handles day to day. The modules and the number of sessions are agreed in the offer. This phase is about understanding your team's reality precisely enough to tailor every exercise and every simulation to it.

Interviews with you and your SEsYour cases, your dealsFinal tailoring to your team
Phase02

Training sessions along the customer journey

The team learns the neuroscientific foundations behind trust and gut feeling on their own situations, then applies them in practical simulations of upcoming discoveries, demos and PoC conversations. Each session takes one conversation situation, with feedback from the group and the trainer. Typically two to five training days, on site or live online.

Half-day or full-day sessionsPractical simulationsLive deals as material
Phase03

Transfer between the sessions

Time between sessions is where the learning settles. Every SE prepares an actual upcoming meeting with the AI coach that knows every tool from the program, and brings the outcome to the next session. Optional 1:1 coaching with the trainer is available between the sessions and after the program, for individual SEs or for you as the leader.

Phase04

Review on your metrics

We look together at the two or three Presales metrics we agreed on at the start, at what the team now does differently in customer conversations, and at where the next step sits. Then you decide what comes next.

Technical win ratePoC conversionDemo-to-next-step

Eight Conversation Situations. One Mechanism.

Together we choose the Presales training modules that match your team's phase. Every module follows the same logic: what happens in the customer's brain, what serves both drivers, and how that sounds in your team's next meeting.

Opening

A Good Gut Feeling From Minute One

The first minutes decide whether the customer tells a story or hands over a list. One sentence that shows the SE has engaged with their situation serves Value before anything technical happens, and sets the tone for the whole meeting.

Discovery

Discovery That Opens the Room

Seven principles that make every question better: open, short, pause, customer-centred, positive, in flow, actively listened. The questions that surface pain point and impact for your blueprint, phrased so the customer tells a story instead of handing over a list.

Demo

The Demo as a Dialogue

Where Master is lost most easily: forty minutes of presentation. How a demo runs along the customer's situation, uses their words and checks in on the way, so both drivers are served and the next step is agreed in the room.

Value

From Tech to Business Value

Feature, bridge, individual benefit. How SEs translate architecture into the outcome the person in front of them is measured on, and build revenue awareness while staying fully the engineer.

Objection

Objections and the Late Security Question

An objection is almost always a threatened driver. First restore Master and Value, then solve together. Includes the late questions from IT, security and procurement that land on the SE's desk.

Written

Writing for the Person Who Reads It

Follow-up mails, PoC summaries, requirement documents. The same drivers apply in writing. Tailoring the message to the CTO, the business owner and the admin, in their language, in fewer lines.

Executive

Executive Briefings and Larger Buying Committees

More business than tech in the room, longer cycles, more people with a say. Reading the drivers of the person who owns the revenue number, and getting them into the conversation early.

Ownership

Owning the Customer Outcome

Prioritising opportunities, leading the customer with clear suggestions, moving a stalled project with a question instead of an explanation. Assertiveness that comes from understanding, with the volume unchanged.

Designed for Lasting Behavioural Change

Solution Engineering training by Gain the Lead is a neuroscience-based communication program for Presales, Solution Engineering and Sales Engineering teams in B2B software companies. Training for SE teams is behavioural change, and behavioural change needs AHA-moments, time and practice. Everything in the program is built from your team's reality.

>80%
Hands-on practice

Practice from the first hour. Your SEs work on real prospects, real demos and real PoCs in practical simulations throughout the whole program. Every tool is tried at once and refined through feedback.

100%
Your scenarios

Your product, your buying committees, your discovery template or blueprint, your upcoming meetings. The technical depth stays with your team. The conversational layer is what we add.

100%
Customised

Designed around your team's phase and your budget: a first-line leader with four SEs who are still in every deal needs a different journey than a Global Head scaling from 10 to 30 engineers.

Measured on the Metrics Presales Already Owns

Presales sits between the revenue line and the cost centre, and the Head of SE is asked to show impact while the number belongs to someone else. We make the contribution of the Solution Engineering training visible on the metrics your function already reports.

Technical win rate

Customers decide first whether they trust the person in front of them, then whether the feature fits. Serving both drivers moves the first decision.

PoC conversion

A discovery that surfaces impact and a demo with an agreed next step make the PoC better qualified before it binds your most expensive capacity.

Demo-to-next-step

Fewer "we'll get back to you". The next step is formulated by the customer in the room, because they co-authored the demo.

Ramp and retention

New SEs get a shared vocabulary from week one. Experienced SEs gain the layer the new role profile asks for, and stay.

Good to Know

What is Solution Engineering training?

Solution Engineering training is communication training for the technical side of a B2B sale: the Presales, Solution Engineering and Sales Engineering teams who run discovery, demos and proofs of concept. At Gain the Lead it is built on the NeuroDriver Model and Neuro-Communication research from the University of Essen, trained on the team's live deals, and designed so that engineers stay engineers while adding the conversational layer the role now asks for.

How is Solution Engineering Training different from classic sales training?

Classic sales training is written for account executives and works on arguments, closing and pipeline technique. This program starts from the Solution Engineer's reality: a technical expert in a customer conversation whose trust, questions and demo flow decide the technical win. The content is the human layer behind discovery, demo and objection, the material is your team's own deals, and the measure is Presales metrics such as technical win rate and PoC conversion. For account executives, Gain the Lead runs a separate B2B Sales Training.

Which teams is this for?

Presales, Solution Engineering, Sales Engineering and Solutions Consulting teams in B2B software and tech companies, typically four to sixty engineers, led by a Head, Director or VP. The program adapts to a first-line leader whose SEs are still in every deal as well as to a global function with team leads.

Does this replace our sales methodology?

It sits on top of it. MEDDIC, Challenger, Command of the Message, your own discovery blueprint: the methodology structures the deal, Neuro-Communication shapes the sentence the SE says next. Both work better together.

How much time does my team invest?

That depends on your team and your budget. Typically two to five training days, spaced out so that the team applies each tool on live deals before the next session. Because the material is the team's own pipeline, much of that time replaces preparation your SEs would do anyway.

In which language and format?

German or English, on site or live online, with an AI coach between the sessions and optional 1:1 coaching. Mixed DACH and international teams are common.

Can we include our Account Executives?

Yes. A joint session with AEs on shared discovery and the hand-over into the demo is an option, because the drivers work inside the deal team exactly as they do with customers.

How do we know it worked?

We agree on two or three Presales metrics before the start, for example technical win rate, PoC conversion or demo-to-next-step rate, and review them together at the end of the journey, alongside what the team now does differently in customer conversations.
